Digitalization of a Shopping Center with Scan to BIM and Archicad
To prepare for a future revitalization project, we digitally captured the entire exterior of a shopping center using laser scanning and Scan to BIM technology. Through highly accurate measurements and a detailed 3D BIM model in Archicad, architects and project stakeholders now have a reliable digital representation of the existing building situation.
Accurate 3D Surveying with FARO Laser Scanners
For this project we used advanced FARO laser scanners to capture the shopping center in detail. This technology allows buildings to be measured quickly and with a very high level of accuracy.
The laser scans were combined into a detailed point cloud, containing millions of measurement points that represent the exact geometry of the building.
During the scanning process, the following elements were captured:
- Facades from street level
- Roofs of the shopping center
- Upper-level facades captured from roof level
This complete coverage provides a reliable digital representation of the building.
From Point Cloud to BIM Model in Archicad
Based on the collected point cloud data, we created a 3D BIM model of the existing situation in Archicad.
The model includes the main architectural elements of the exterior. Objects above the plinth are represented as solids, ensuring that the geometry can be used clearly and efficiently during the design process.
With this Scan to BIM workflow, a highly accurate digital base model is created on which architects and consultants can develop their plans.
Online Access with NavVis Ivion
To improve collaboration and project insight, all stakeholders were given access to the NavVis Ivion online viewer.
This allows architects, developers, and other project partners to:
- View the point cloud online
- Navigate through the building digitally
- Perform measurements
- Analyze the existing situation
As a result, all stakeholders have access to the same up-to-date project information anytime and anywhere.

By combining laser scanning, point cloud data, a BIM model in Archicad, and an online viewer, architects and clients can base their plans on the actual building conditions.
