Point cloud to BIM and digital twin from steelworks

Pointcloud naar BIM en digital twin van staalfabriek

More and more users of production environments are choosing to gain more insight into their real estate and installations through the use of a digital twin.

By using a digital twin in the design / renovation process, all parties involved have a better understanding of the existing and new situation, so that better design choices can be made and failure costs can be avoided. By means of, among other things, clash checks, they can see, for example, whether there are no conflicts between pipes and supporting structures.

In this case, the client wanted to see whether a new production line fit within the existing environment.

BIMnD has completely digitised their manufacturing hall of approx. 4,000m2.

We measured the inside of the building with a NaVvis VLX mobile scanner, the outside and parts of the frames with static 3D laser scanners from Faro technologies. We have merged the measurement data into a single point cloud. This point cloud will be used as a support to create a BIM model of the existing situation.

We have made the 3D scans and the 360-degree photos available to all stakeholders in an online viewer. This viewer makes it possible to visit the object digitally from any device at any location, such as Google Streetview, but with more options:

  • Taking precision measurements in the point cloud data
  • Add point of interest, such as maintenance specifications

A physical visit to the site is therefore no longer necessary. If you also wish to digitise your production environment, please contact us.
